ACUACULTURE SECTOR AFFECTED BY HIGH COST OF POND LINERS

The high cost of electricity tariffs and pond liners in the country is negatively affecting the growth of the aquaculture sector, the Zambian Aquaculture Cooperative Society has said.
Society Chairperson Dr. Collins Kachaka has explained that most fish farmers in the country use boreholes to draw water in their ponds, a situation which has proved to be expensive.
Dr. Kachaka has also disclosed that the cost of pond liners is too high for farmers and that there is need for the country to produce pond liners locally.
He has since appealed to government to come up with a concession that will enable fish farmers to pay less for electricity as well as provide a scheme for farmers to acquire pond liners.
