Minister of Health, Dr. Jonas Chanda today announced to parliament that the first consignment of the Covid-19 vaccine under the COVAX initiative is expected to arrive in Zambia on Monday 12th April, 2021.

Dr. Chanda says the consignment consists an initial 228,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine which will be administered to about 3.6 million Zambians above the age of 18 years. He said the initial consignment would cover 20% of Zambia’s population. He said this when he delivered a Ministerial Statement to Parliament.

Dr. Chanda says frontline staff such as health workers, police officers and teachers among others will be prioritized and that the remaining population will be covered under other vaccine programs.

Dr. Chanda reiterated that government will ensure that the health of citizens is protected and encouraged members of the public to get vaccinated, emphasizing that the benefits outweigh the risks associated to the vaccines.
