100 Ethiopian inmates protest at Namusheche Correctional Facility in Chipata

One hundred Ethiopians convicted of entering the country illegally and incarcerated at Namusheche Correctional Facility in Chipata District yesterday staged a protest and demanded to be repatriated to their country to serve out their sentences.

Doreen Ngoma, the Zambia Correctional Service Public Relations Officer confirmed to Capital FM News that the incident happened on Monday morning and explained that the situation was brought under control and that calm had been restored to the facility.

Mrs. Ngoma, could not confirm reports that over 40 people were injured during the protest referred all queries to the Department of Immigration.

However, when reached for a comment, the Department of Immigrations’ Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka could not give details on the matter and said the department was still gathering information.
