Health Minister Dr Jonas Chanda has warned against the use of drugs meant for animals to treat or prevent Covid-19 in Zambia. Dr Chanda is worried that some people are using Ivermectin, a drug which in Zambia is registered and authorized for veterinary use only.
He urged Zambians to desist from taking drugs meant for animals to treat or prevent Covid-19 because their safety and effectiveness has only been evaluated for animal species and can cause serious harm to humans.
Dr Chanda further stated that self-medication carries numerous risks including; incorrect self-diagnosis, potential adverse reactions and dangerous drug resistance.
Dr Chanda also announced that Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded 1, 289 new Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths. 308 people are said to be on oxygen therapy with 48 of them in critical condition.
