The Ministry of General Education says since the inception of the ‘Keeping Girls in School Project’ in 2016, it has supported 28,799 vulnerable secondary school girls with school bursaries.

Ministry spokesperson, Nondo Chilongo says the girls are from 29 districts across the 10 provinces of Zambia in which the project has been implemented. Ms Chilonga says the project focuses on increasing access to livelihood support for extremely poor rural women and access to secondary education for vulnerable girls in extremely poor households in the selected districts.

This came to light during the recent Girls’ Education, Women Empowerment and Livelihood (GEWEL) Project First Quarter Technical Committee virtual meeting. Ms Chilonga said the project has added 10 more districts this years in addition to the existing 29 hence bringing the total number of districts on the project to 39.
