Continued poor performance in Grade 9 mathematics worries Minister of General Education

General Education Minister, Dr. Dennis Wanchinga is concerned with the continued poor performance in Mathematics at Grade 9 level. Dr. Wanchinga says an analysis of the 2020 Grade 9 examinations performance by subject, revealed that the highest percentage mean score was recorded in Design and Technology at 62.77 percent and the least in Mathematics at 21.00 percent.

Announcing the 2020 Grade 9 results, Dr. Wanchinga observed that Mathematics continues to pose a challenge to candidates and that the situation calls for concerted efforts aimed at improving performance. Dr. Wanchinga also revealed that a total of 135, 300 out of the 254,852 candidates who sat for the examination obtained full Grade 9 certificates and have progressed to Grade 10.

Dr. Wanchinga further announced that there were no reported leakages of examination question papers during both the 2020 Grade 7 and Grade 9 Internal examinations but that 18 cases of suspected examination malpractices were reported during the conduct of the Grade 9 examination.

Dr. Wanchinga disclosed that all the 403, 445 candidates who sat for the 2020 Grade 7 Composite Examination have progressed to grade 8. He said the 2021 Grade 8 and 10 classes will open on Monday 1st March 2021 and that the grace period of two weeks will end on Friday 12th March 2021.
