Government withdraws extension of fishing ban

Written by on February 2, 2021

Vice President Wina this afternoon told Parliament that government has withdrawn Gazette notice number 1374 on the extension of the fishing ban from 31st March 2021 to 31st May 2021 in response to the negative feedback received from stakeholders

Mrs Wina says the withdrawal will allow government to consult all stakeholders and sensitize fishing communities before such an extension is implemented.

In response to Chiengi FDD Member of Parliament, Given Katuta who wanted to know why the government had extended the fish ban by three (3) months, Mrs Wina only said the consultations would extend to neighbouring countries that share water bodies with Zambia.

Mrs Wina acknowledged the economic impact the extension would have on the fishing communities and explained that the current fish ban will end on Sunday 28th February 2021.
