Household food security at risk – Virgil Malambo

Written by on January 31, 2021

A farmers organization in Eastern Province has warned that the region’s household food security is at risk due to the high cost of fertilizer.

Chipata District Farmers Association Coordinator, Virgil Malambo says that both Compound-D and Top Dressing is fertilizer are fetching between K550 and K600 per 50kg bag.

Mr. Malambo says this is beyond the reach of most smallholder farmers as a majority of them are not beneficiaries of subsidized farming inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). He said he is worried that if no intervention is done immediately, the regions yield stands to be negatively impacted.
