Written by on January 22, 2021

The Movement for Democratic Change has challenged government to provide more details regarding the acquisition of 100% shares in Mopani Copper Mines Plc. Party President, Felix Mutati said this information will enable citizens to evaluate the deal government has entered into on their behalf.

Mr Mutati said Zambians deserve to understand why Glencore has decided to sell its shares to ZCCM-IH at the time copper prices are at a record high of about $8,000 per tonne. Mr Mutati has also challenged government to tell the nation where it would source the $300 million required for the mine to be profitable when the country is struggling with a huge debt.

Mr. Mutati called on government to change the country’s policy and tax system in order to promote investment in the mining sector.
