PANOS Institute Southern Africa and Bloggers of Zambia have today launched a project dubbed “fighting misinformation and promoting democracy in Zambia” with the aim of helping to provide correct information.
The project which will be implemented with the help of the German Embassy in Zambia aims at ensuring that correct information is disseminated on various media platforms.
Launching the project, Vusumuzi Sifile, the PANOS Institute Southern Africa Executive Director expressed concern that there has been an increase in misinformation during the Coronavirus pandemic and this is likely to continue if it is not addressed. He said misinformation is one of the biggest threats to the growth of democracy and development in Zambia.
Bloggers of Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Richard Mulonga said the project will work with stakeholders such as policy makers, the police, media, artists, online content creators among others.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Operations, Charity Katanga said misinformation is a recipe for violence and the Police will not allow this practice to go unabated.
