The Zambia Roads and Highway Safety Group has urged the Road Development Agency to quickly work on the stretch between Woodlands roundabout in Woodlands and High Court roundabout on Independence avenue to prevent further loss of lives through road accidents.
On Saturday the 5th of December 2020 a road traffic accident occurred when a BMW motor vehicle clipped a pothole and lost control and slammed into a tree on Independence Avenue just outside Madison House. The high speed impact against the tree split the vehicle in two, killing all three people onboard.
The Group says the Road Development Agency (RDA) and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) should place warning signs to alert motorists of the bad sections on the road caused by roots of the trees that line the road.
Group Admin Mthoniswa Banda has recommended that second hand cars should also be investigated by the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency to ensure that those that were written off based on their poor safety standards are not re-introduced on the Zambian roads.
He said the Group was concerned about the splitting of the vehicles’ chassis which should not have happened as the structure is designed and expected to withstand high impacts.
